Our Story
Upstate Bottle Return got its start in 2015 when Andriy bought the business with just one center in Hamlin, New York. What began as a single-location operation quickly became the foundation for something much bigger. Andriy saw the potential to grow the business and serve more communities across the region.
A major turning point came when he took a two-week course to qualify for a grant in Orleans County. That opportunity helped him open Upstate’s second and third locations, giving the company the momentum it needed to expand beyond Hamlin.
In 2018, Dan joined the business as a minority owner to help open more locations and support the company’s continued growth. Together, Andriy and Dan focused on building a stronger business by bringing in people they trusted. They hired friends with expertise in the bottle return industry, which helped create a knowledgeable team and a consistent operation across locations.
Over the next several years, Upstate Bottle Return grew from one center into a network of 13 locations. Today, the company is not only known for its growth, but also for its leadership in new processing and counting technology in the redemption industry. From a small start in Hamlin, Upstate has grown into an innovative leader in the business.

Daniel Schickler
Minority Owner & Operations Manager
Dan is a Minority Owner and Operations Manager at Upstate Bottle Return, playing a key role in the company’s growth and day-to-day operations. He began his career with Bill Gray’s in 2007, where he advanced into management and purchasing, gaining valuable experience in local business operations. Dan joined Upstate in 2016 at its original Hamlin, NY location and became a co-owner in 2017 alongside Andriy. Since then, he has been instrumental in expanding the business from a single location to 13 stores across the region.

Jack Flechaus
Head of Marketing & Events
Jack Flechaus has been a driving force at Upstate Bottle Return since beginning his career with the company in 2019. He started in the resale and processing of bottles and cans, gaining hands-on experience in the operational backbone of the business and developing a deep understanding of its day-to-day functions.
As he grew within the organization, Jack assumed responsibility for payment operations and fundraising efforts, helping improve financial workflows while expanding community engagement initiatives. His cross-functional experience allowed him to connect operational efficiency with customer and partner outreach.
Now serving as Head of Marketing, Jack oversees brand development, growth strategy, and customer engagement. His well-rounded background across operations and finance informs a strategic, results-oriented marketing approach that supports Upstate Bottle Return’s continued expansion and commitment to sustainability.
